Buda in Spring

As the spring weather lengthens the days and our deciduous garden landscapes take on new dimensions, there is still much to see and do at Buda Historic Home and Garden.
Listed on National and State Heritage Registers, Buda Historic Home and Garden is “a significant heritage asset not only to the region, but also to the state of Victoria and Australia,” a recent report has concluded.

As an important tourist destination in the Mount Alexander Shire, Buda has strong links with the discovery of gold, the arts and craft movement, heritage gardens and ecological issues, women’s history, and a unique house collection.

Buda has also become a hub for contemporary arts featuring textiles and silver and metal work exhibitions. Deakin Lecturer, Jonathan Sweet, recently spoke about the challenges of historic houses maintaining their relevance and applauded Buda on the Contemporary Textiles Awards & Exhibition held in June.

“There are very clear values that have come out of the Leviny family through art and design over the past one hundred years,” he said. “It is a big challenge to link a heritage property to a contemporary world and Buda is to be congratulated on finding innovative ways to link between the past, present and future.”

In addition to the fascinating experience of walking through this museum accredited property occupied by two generations of the Leviny family over a 118 year period, visitors to Buda have three acres of enchanting gardens to explore.

A plant nursery also offers for sale a wide range of heritage trees, shrubs, roses and ground covers ideally suited for planting in preparation for Spring. Or you can purchase some local produce and delightful craft items from the Buda Gift Shop.

Visitors can be assured of a very warm welcome to Buda Historic Home & Garden at any time of the year and are encouraged to make plans for a repeat visit in Spring when the property is host to a number of events leading up to and in conjunction with the Festival of Gardens.

Set aside Saturday 11 September for a self drive Garden Ramble entitled “Buds, Bulbs & Blossoms” of private gardens in the district including Buda. The day will culminate with a One Hundred Kilometer Dinner and the annual Josie McEwen Lecture with guest speaker, Annette Zealley, Director of the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

Or “Come Flirt with Flowers and Frogs” and be “Serenaded by Moonlight” during the Festival of Gardens from late October. Details can be found in the Festival Program or on the Buda website: www.budacastlemaine.org.

Opening hours of Buda are Wednesday to Saturday from 12 noon to 5pm, and Sundays and public holidays from 10am until 5pm. Guided tours are available at no extra cost at 2.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
